Octagon Cage Guide: Size, Floor and Why Eight Sides

Octagon Cage Guide: Size, Floor and Why Eight Sides Featured Image

An octagonal MMA cage is an eight-sided enclosed fighting area used for training and competition. The UFC’s branded Octagon is a well-known example, with a published 30 ft interior fighting area. Cage dimensions, platform design and venue requirements differ by application. The cage is still small enough to keep the fight engaged.

What Is Octagon in MMA?

The Octagon is the eight-sided fenced fighting area where MMA bouts take place. It debuted at UFC 1 in 1993 and became the visual identity of the sport.

The eight-sided layout provides angled fence sections rather than the four corners of a boxing ring. It also creates a continuous fenced boundary that influences movement and clinch exchanges. Avoid treating this layout alone as proof of superior safety.

UFC describes a coated fence, padded components, two opposing gates and a canvas-covered competition surface. Construction details for a commercial gym cage should be confirmed against the actual product specification.

“The Octagon” vs an octagon cage

The UFC uses Octagon as a protected brand designation. Generic octagonal MMA cages are available for gyms and promotions, but buyers should avoid using UFC branding, protected graphics or designs without authorization. Brand and design rights should be reviewed for the intended market.

MMA competition enclosures are subject to the rules and inspection requirements of the relevant commission or sanctioning body. Confirm the accepted shape, dimensions, flooring and entry arrangements before purchasing a cage for sanctioned events.

Octagon Cage Size and Dimensions

UFC lists an interior fighting-space width of 30 ft (9.1 m) and an overall exterior diameter of 38 ft (11.6 m) for its published full-size configuration. These are reference dimensions, not universal specifications for commercial MMA cages.

Dimension Imperial Metric
Standard diameter (across the floor) 30 ft 9.1 m
Smaller-venue cage about 25 ft about 7.6 m
Fence height about 6 ft (varies by venue) about 1.75–1.83 m
Platform height about 4 ft about 1.2 m

For the published UFC configuration, fence height above the canvas is 5 ft 9 in (approximately 1.75 m). A commercial gym cage may have different dimensions.

Sanctioning bodies set their own size requirements for competition. If you plan to host sanctioned bouts, check the current rules of your commission or federation before you fix dimensions. For how a cage is built, see the panel, door and padding specifications.

Why Does MMA Use an Octagon?

The angled perimeter supports movement around multiple fence sections, while the enclosure prevents fighters from passing through open ropes. In MMA, cage-side control remains an important tactical factor. Avoid claiming the design eliminates trapping or independently guarantees safety.

  • Octagon: eight wide corners with no trap points, and the fence is part of the fight. Fighters can still use the fence to pin or escape.
  • Round cage: no corners at all, so nobody can be cornered.
  • Boxing ring: Some MMA promotions have used boxing-style rings. Venue owners should compare enclosure type, safety requirements, sightlines and applicable competition rules before deciding.

For a ring-based layout, see our boxing ring size and floor system guide.

How Tall Is the Octagon Cage, and How Hard Is the Floor?

Fence height

About 6 ft (1.8 m) at the UFC, per the table above, and it varies slightly by venue.

The Octagon floor

The floor surface must provide suitable traction and be securely fixed over a properly specified cushioning system. For training and event use, ask about the cover material, cleaning method, replacement procedure and applicable event requirements. Every event ends with a uniquely stained floor.

Fence, padding and canvas materials

  • Fence: metal chain-link coated with black vinyl (Wikipedia).
  • Fence padding: foam padding around the top of the fence and between each of the eight sections (Wikipedia).
  • Floor: a canvas over padding, painted with sponsor logos and art, and replaced for each event (Wikipedia). Dana White says the UFC added more padding under the canvas over the years (ESPN).

Floor padding requirements depend on the governing rules and intended use. For sanctioned events, verify the applicable commission’s current minimums and acceptable floor coverings. For custom gym cages, request written floor-layer specifications rather than assuming a universal thickness. If you want a supplier’s figures for your layout, send us your requirements.

Sizing for a gym

Gym cages are usually smaller than the UFC’s 30 ft Octagon, and the UFC’s own smaller cage is roughly 25 ft. The room usually decides: leave clearance around the cage for coaches, entry and movement. A cage squeezed against walls is awkward to use and to maintain.

Ceiling clearance

Calculate the highest point from the actual platform and fence specifications, then check site-specific overhead clearances for lighting, sprinklers, ventilation and installation. Do not treat the cage’s overall height as the minimum safe ceiling height.

Floor-only vs raised builds

  • Floor-only: the cage sits directly on your gym floor or mats. It is simpler and takes less overall height, and there are no steps to climb. The trade-off is that the fight sits at floor level, so sightlines for spectators are limited.
  • Raised platform: the UFC-style build, with the cage about 4 ft (1.2 m) off the ground. It gives spectators and officials a clear view, but it needs steps or access ramps, extra floor space and a higher ceiling.

Confirm which build a supplier offers before you commit to a layout.

Four decisions before you request a quote

  1. For training use, select dimensions based on available floor space and planned activities. For sanctioned competitions, first obtain the applicable regulator’s enclosure requirements, then confirm the proposed cage layout and documentation with the manufacturer.
  2. Plan the platform and access. Decide floor-only or raised, and where the doors go. Two opposite gates is the layout at the UFC.
  3. Decide training vs. competition use. A gym training cage and a cage for sanctioned events can have different requirements. Check any sanctioning body’s rules first.
  4. Don’t brand it “UFC” or “The Octagon.” Call it an octagonal MMA cage and put your own gym or event name on it.

Octagon FAQ

What is Octagon in MMA?

It is the eight-sided, fenced cage where MMA bouts take place. It debuted at UFC 1 in 1993 and became the sport’s signature look. “The Octagon” is the UFC’s trademarked name; other promotions call theirs an octagon cage or simply a cage.

How tall and how big is the UFC Octagon?

A standard UFC Octagon is 30 ft (9.1 m) across, with a fence of about 6 ft (1.75–1.83 m) and a platform of about 4 ft (1.2 m). Fence height varies slightly by venue. For smaller venues, the UFC uses a cage of roughly 25 ft (7.6 m).

Why does MMA use an Octagon instead of a ring or round cage?

Eight wide corners leave nowhere for a fighter to be trapped, unlike the four hard corners of a boxing ring. The cage has no ropes to fall through, and the fence adds strategy. A round cage has no corners at all, while the Octagon keeps the structure of flat fence panels.

How hard is the UFC Octagon floor?

It is firm but padded: a canvas stretched over padding on a raised platform. The canvas is grippy rather than slippery, which is why fighters wet their feet before a fight. It stains over the course of an event, and the canvas is replaced for each one.

What information do I need to request a custom MMA cage quotation?

Send the intended use, indoor dimensions, preferred cage size, floor or raised-platform design, desired branding, quantity and destination. We can then confirm the feasible configuration and quotation details.

Is “the Octagon” trademarked, and can I buy an octagonal cage for my gym?

“The Octagon” is a trademarked UFC term, but the eight-sided shape is not, and other promotions have been allowed to use octagonal cages since 2001. You can buy an octagonal MMA cage from a manufacturer such as Crosste, but not a “UFC Octagon.”

What size MMA cage fits a gym or small promotion?

The right size depends on the venue and intended use. For gyms, start with the usable floor area and ceiling clearance. For sanctioned events, confirm the required fighting area and other specifications with the relevant authority before ordering.
