An MMA cage that meets real spec standards uses hexagonal or octagonal panels sized between 1.0-1.2 meters wide, a minimum 6-foot-tall fence structure, at least one 36-inch inward-swinging door with a positive latch, high-density padding on every post and panel seam, and a cage floor that's mechanically integrated with the mat system underneath rather than just resting on top of it. Miss any one of those elements and you're not building a competition-grade cage — you're building a liability with good branding. Let's go through each piece.
Here's a mistake we see constantly: buyers assume all octagon cages use the same panel dimensions because they're all called 'standard.' They don't. Commercial cages typically range from 24-foot to 32-foot diameter (floor to floor), and the number of panels making up the ring changes with that diameter — usually between 8 and 10 hexagonal fence sections.
For a 30-foot cage, individual panels run roughly 1.0-1.2 meters wide and 1.8-2.0 meters tall, framed in 16-gauge or heavier steel tube. Anything thinner than 16-gauge on a commercial cage will flex under a body slam against the fence — and it will show within months, not years.
A common design error is treating panel height and floor diameter as unrelated numbers. They're not. A taller fence (7 feet vs. 6 feet) needs a wider base diameter to keep the structure stable under lateral impact, or you'll need heavier corner post footings to compensate. If you're speccing a custom size, always work the ratio backward from your available floor space, not forward from a catalog panel size.

Every MMA cage needs at least one door, but most commercial venues install two — one for competitor entry and one for corner/medical access. Doors should swing inward, not outward, for a simple safety reason: an outward-swinging door can be pushed open from inside during a scramble near the fence, sending a fighter through the gap.
Minimum door width should be 36 inches to allow stretcher access if needed. The latch mechanism matters more than people think — spring-loaded flush latches that sit inside the padding are standard, because any protruding hardware becomes a laceration risk the moment someone gets driven into the fence.
For example, a regional promotion running weekly fight cards typically specs two doors 180 degrees apart, both flush-latched, both padded identically to the surrounding panels — no visual or structural difference that would let a fighter identify a 'softer' exit point during a fight.

Padding location changes the density requirement, and using one foam grade everywhere is a common (and costly) shortcut. Corner posts and turnbuckles take the most concentrated impact — that's where fighters get driven shoulder-first — so those areas need high-density closed-cell foam at 2.5 lb/ft³ or higher, at least 8-10 cm thick.
Flat fence panels between posts absorb more distributed, glancing impact, so medium-firm foam at 1.8-2.2 lb/ft³ and 5-8 cm thickness is sufficient and keeps the cage from feeling like a bouncy castle. Too-soft padding on flat panels actually increases rebound injury risk because fighters lose balance pushing off it unpredictably.
Vinyl covering needs to be at least 18-20 oz per yard, double-stitched or heat-welded at seams. Cheaper 13-14 oz vinyl looks identical on day one and splits at the seams within a season of regular sparring use. If you're comparing suppliers, ask for the exact oz weight — don't accept 'commercial-grade' as an answer.
A cage isn't just a fence — it's a fence sitting on a floor system, and that connection point is where most structural failures and injuries actually originate. The cage base ring needs to either bolt directly into a sub-frame beneath the mat, or sit inside a recessed channel that keeps the fence from shifting laterally when someone hits it at speed.

Between the outer edge of the fighting surface and the cage fence sits an apron — usually 30-45 cm wide. This zone gets ignored in a lot of cheaper builds, but it's exactly where fighters land after being driven into the fence. It needs the same anti-slip vinyl as the main mat and a firm foam base, not a thin cosmetic strip.

The frame is the part nobody photographs but everyone should ask about. Corner posts carry the most repeated lateral load in the entire structure — every clinch against the cage transfers force through the nearest post. Posts should use minimum 2-inch square steel tubing, 14-gauge or heavier, with a welded (not bolted-only) base plate.
Bolted-only connections work fine for portable/practice cages but are the wrong choice for anything hosting live competition or heavy daily sparring — vibration loosens bolts over time, and a post with even 3-5 degrees of play becomes a safety issue nobody notices until it's already a problem mid-fight.
Buyers often assume cage dimensions are fixed by some universal rule. They're not — outside of specific sanctioning body requirements for televised events, most gym and training-facility cages are built to whatever floor space is available, typically 20-28 feet diameter for non-broadcast use.
Custom branding is straightforward on the padding covers — logo printing or embroidery on the vinyl panels is a standard OEM request, and it doesn't compromise the foam performance underneath if it's done at the manufacturing stage rather than as an aftermarket patch. Facility insurers and equipment inspectors flag the same issues over and over. Exposed turnbuckle hardware through worn padding tops the list — if padding compresses over time and hardware pokes through, that's an immediate fail. Gaps larger than 4 inches between fence panels are next; a limb can get caught in anything wider.
Non-matching apron and fence padding colors seem cosmetic but often indicate mismatched foam batches from a rushed repair job — which usually means mismatched density too. And loose bottom rails that don't anchor to the floor are the most dangerous of all, since they let the entire lower fence section shift under weight.
